You are not

You are not an empty promise.

You are not a crutch. A convenient contingency plan.

You are not the last resort.

You are not - and you never have been.


You are not the final step in an equation.

You're not an essay-ending trick.

You are not that argument-winning put-me-down

You are not a rejection, a refusal. You are never "No."


You are not an overly simplistic maxim

A mantra, a helpful motivating catchphrase.

You are not a ticket to somewhere else.

A means to some selfish end.


You are not a slot machine.

You are not. And you never will be.

You are Truth. You are Life. You are Freedom.

You are the Only Place I have to go.


You are a Refuge. You are a Rock.

Hard enough to crash into. Solid enough, steady enough

That you will never flinch - regardless of the storm

You are Higher than I.  And so much better

Than my halting heart imagines.


You are not made in my image.

You are not on my schedule.

You are not answerable to me.

You are not on my payroll. (Not my assistant.)


You are Jesus. You have gone before me

Giving water long before I recognised thirst.

Dying for me before I understood sin.

Praying for me now -  before I've realised what I need.


You are not many things.

You never have been. You never will be.

You are better, far better than them all.

You are Jesus.
